abstract

Paper i argued that the present moment is the global optimum of consciousness, and treated the apex of the light cone as a point. This paper asks the question paper i left open: if the present is the optimum, what mechanism makes it possible to leave? The answer proposed is biology. Duration is generated rather than received, by oscillators and coincidence windows whose sizes are measurable, which means the present has a width. That width is named τ and is argued to be a parameter rather than a constant. Paper i optimised position in time; the open problem is optimising extent. At the limit of large τ, sequence dissolves, which is the same geometry as a null interval, where temporal and spatial separation cancel exactly. Three distinct claims about stopped time are separated so they cannot be confused with each other, the memetic ladder from thought to biology is assessed and found true but too slow to be useful without a shortcut, and the argument that machine intelligence produces oneness through bandwidth is conceded and rebuilt as an argument about lossy compression instead.

Paper i argued that the present moment is the global optimum of consciousness. That all optimisation paths terminate at t = 0, that suffering is the tax levied by a mind which has left the present without a valid reason to return, and that the solution space is widest at the apex of the light cone because that is the only coordinate where past information is fully integrated and future influence is still available.

I still think that is right. But it stops one question short, and the question it stops short of is the interesting one.

If the present is the optimum, what makes it possible to leave? What is the machine that produces the sensation of displacement in the first place? A mind that could not represent duration could not ruminate, could not anticipate, could not be anywhere other than here. The capacity to suffer temporally is downstream of a capacity to measure temporally. So before you optimise your position in time, you should ask what is generating the axis.

The answer is biology. And once you take that seriously, the whole argument changes shape.

01the body is a clock, not a window

The intuitive model is that time passes and the body observes it. A river, and a person on the bank watching it go by. This model is wrong in a way that is not merely philosophical, it is contradicted by the measurements.

Duration is generated, not received, and we know roughly where. Circadian rhythm runs on a transcription and translation feedback loop with a period near twenty four hours, a literal chemical oscillator that keeps running in constant darkness. Interval timing in the seconds to minutes range is modulated by striatal and dopaminergic circuits. Raise dopamine and subjective duration compresses, lower it and duration stretches. Core body temperature shifts the felt rate. And the window in which two neural events count as the same event for the purposes of synaptic plasticity is roughly ten to twenty milliseconds wide, which is why paper i could argue that the brain learns only in the present. It does not learn in the present out of preference. It learns there because the coincidence detector has a width, and outside that width there is no signal.

At the top of the stack sits the specious present: the span of time that arrives as a single experienced now rather than as a memory. James named it, and the experimental range that has come back since is on the order of two to three seconds. That is not a philosophical estimate. That is the approximate size of the frame.

the body is not watching time go past. the body is the thing producing the frames, and the frame has a width.

Call that width τ. It is the aperture of the present. Everything that falls inside τ arrives fused, as one thing. Everything outside it arrives as sequence: reconstruction on one side, simulation on the other, exactly the two degraded regimes paper i spent its length warning about.

This reframes the earlier result. Paper i told you to stand at t = 0. It treated the apex as a point. But the apex is not a point. It is a band, its width is τ, and τ is set by biochemistry. Which means it is not a constant. It is a parameter.

02the limit case, stated properly

Now take τ to its limit and ask what happens. If the aperture widens without bound, every event in your causal history falls inside a single present. Nothing is reconstruction, nothing is simulation. There is no sequence left to experience, because sequence requires two frames and there is only one. That is what people mean when they say time stopped. Not that the clock broke. That the frame swallowed the clock.

And there is a physical object with exactly this property, which is where the photon comes in. But it has to be stated correctly or it gets thrown out on sight.

The loose version, the one that circulates, is that a photon from the early universe experiences its emission and its absorption in your eye as instantaneous. A physicist will refuse this immediately, and they are right to, because a photon has no valid rest frame. There is no perspective to speak from. The moment you say "what the photon experiences" you have left physics.

The version that survives is about the interval, not the observer. Along a null path the spacetime interval is exactly zero:

ds² = c²dt² − dx² = 0 for anything travelling at c, duration and separation are the same quantity with opposite sign, and they cancel exactly.

This is stronger than the loose version, and it is also more beautiful. Thirteen point eight billion years of duration and thirteen point eight billion light years of separation do not merely feel simultaneous. They annihilate. The interval between the surface of last scattering and your retina is zero, not approximately zero. The light cone is the seam of the universe, the surface where time and space are revealed to be the same currency held in opposite hands.

oneness is not the absence of time. it is the exact cancellation of time against space, and there is a surface in the universe where that cancellation is complete.

So the claim is not that time does not exist. The claim is narrower and defensible: at the null limit, temporal separation and spatial separation cancel, and there is no interval left to traverse. The mystic's report and the light cone are describing the same geometry from two ends. One arrives by widening τ until sequence dissolves. The other is what a zero interval looks like from outside.

03three stopped clocks, which must not be confused

This is where I have to be strict with myself, because there are three separate claims here wearing one coat, and sliding between them is how an argument like this loses a careful reader. They are not the same claim and they do not support each other for free.

eternalism metaphysics contested all moments coexist and passage is the illusion. compatible with relativity but not implied by it. must be argued for, never assumed.

The honest position is that this paper lives in the second row. The first row supplies a limit case and a piece of geometry to point at. The third row is a place the argument could go, but it must walk there and pay the fare, not arrive by association. Any time this paper reads as if the photon proves something about consciousness, it has cheated, and that passage should be cut.

04the ladder from thought to body, and why it is slow

The second half of the theory is the causal ladder. Thoughts make memes, memes make cultures, cultures make people, and people are biology. If that ladder holds, then hacking thought reaches all the way down to the body, and the aperture becomes editable from the top.

The ladder is real. Gene and culture coevolution is documented and not controversial: lactase persistence spread because dairying spread, alcohol dehydrogenase variants track millennia of fermentation, and the Baldwin effect describes the general mechanism by which learned behaviour changes the selection landscape that then writes into the genome. Culture does reach the body. That is not speculation.

The problem is the gearing. Culture writes into biology at something like ten thousand years per sentence, while memes move in hours. So the ladder as stated is true and useless. It is a channel with a bandwidth so low that nothing you do in a lifetime propagates.

Which means the actual proposal is not "the ladder exists." It is shortcut the ladder. Skip the genome and edit the aperture directly, within one lifetime, through whatever intervenes on the clock: pharmacology, contemplative training, neuromodulation, and eventually something better. Stated that way it is a research programme with a real failure mode, rather than a chain of metaphors.

One terminology fix, because these get used interchangeably and they are not the same. The chain described here is memetic, Dawkins, replicators competing for hosts. Mimetic is Girard, desire copied from other people. Keep them apart in the text, and then use both, because they fit together well: memetics gives the replication mechanism, and Girard supplies the fitness function. Memes do not spread because they are true. They spread because someone we want to be like wanted them first.

05why more bandwidth has not made us one

The machine intelligence part of the argument, in its first form, was this: artificial intelligence will build perfect information pathways, and perfect information pathways will produce felt oneness.

The obvious objection has to be conceded before the claim is made, because it is fatal to the version above. This exact argument was made for the internet in 1995. Connect everyone, and parochialism dies. Bandwidth went up by orders of magnitude and what we got was more differentiation, not less. More tribes, more incommensurable worlds, more people who cannot parse each other at all. Empirically, throughput is not the binding constraint on oneness. If it were, we would already be more one than we were, and we are not.

So the claim has to be rebuilt, and the rebuild is better than the original.

The constraint was never throughput. It is that language is lossy compression of experience. Every word is a hash of a qualia state, transmitted to a receiver who decompresses it with a different dictionary, built from a different body. When I say grief I emit maybe forty bits toward a state that has millions. You receive the forty bits and reconstruct from your own archive. We then agree that we have understood each other. We have not. We have agreed on a label.

everything humans have ever transmitted to each other has gone through the symbol layer. we have never once sent the thing itself.

On this reading the interesting promise of machine intelligence is not more pipe. It is a channel that does not route through symbols at all: transfer of structure rather than transfer of labels. And it connects directly to τ, because two minds sharing an aperture is precisely what would be meant by a fused present. That is the version worth defending. It is falsifiable, it names a mechanism, and it is the subject of paper iv rather than something to be waved at here.

06what qri already built, and where to diverge

There is an existing programme that has done a great deal of the formal work this argument needs, and the honest move is to build on it and say where it gets left. The Qualia Research Institute has assembled roughly the following, and each piece maps onto something required here.

Where to diverge. QRI's programme is fundamentally about valence: what makes experience good or bad, and how to engineer more of the good. This paper is about temporal extent: how wide a single experience is, and what happens at the limit. Those are different axes of the same object. The contribution on offer is not another valence theory. It is the claim that temporal extent is the neglected axis, that it is measurable, and that the contemplative literature has been reporting variations along it for three thousand years without a coordinate to name them with.

a caution worth writing down

QRI sits outside mainstream academic consciousness research, and the symmetry theory of valence in particular is not a settled result. Citing this material as though it were established will cost credibility with exactly the readers most worth convincing. Cite it as a live programme being engaged with, name the objections, and the same citations become a strength instead.

07the conjecture, stated as a conjecture

There is one link in this chain with no mechanism, and in the first draft it was quietly carrying the conclusion. It is the claim that consciousness manifests matter, which is what makes the leap from "information could travel at c" to "and therefore it will, because thought precedes substance."

Every other step here is either established physics, a measurable neuroscientific fact, or a clearly labelled speculation with a named mechanism. This one is an assertion. A reader looking for the weak point will find exactly this brick, and everything above it comes down when they pull.

So it is promoted here to a named conjecture with falsification conditions owed, rather than buried mid paragraph where it does structural work in disguise. A paper that says here is the step I am willing to be wrong about, and here is what would show it is stronger than one that hopes nobody is reading closely.

The rest of the theory does not need it. τ is a parameter, biology sets it, the parameter is editable, and at the limit sequence dissolves. That argument stands with no metaphysics of manifestation anywhere in it. Keep the conjecture, label it, and let it be separable.

08what this paper claims, compressed

Paper i ended by saying the mind should come home to the present. This one ends somewhere less comfortable, which is that the present we are coming home to is about three seconds wide, that this number was set by a biochemistry nobody chose, and that treating it as fixed is the same category of error as treating the lifespan as fixed. What follows from that is paper iii.

the still point was never the destination. it is the aperture, and it opens.
